
The tragic events at Virginia Tech in April 2007 served as a wake-up call to the nation. There is more work to be done to secure our college and university campuses and to make our students safer and better informed.
- Colleges and universities everywhere are revisiting their emergency preparedness plans and making sure they have
the best technology and best practices in place to keep students and staff safe. At Virginia Tech, for example, more
than 4,000 students and employees have already signed up for the university’s new text message alerting system.
- Lawmakers in Washington DC and around the country are pushing new legislation that will improve campus safety.
- Parents are sending their students back to school this fall with a heightened awareness of the importance of campus safety.
